John Dalton - Career Path

Question: What has been your career path so far?

My background was in research, I have a background as a Geologist. So, for a number of years I was working in research in Geology. But, several years ago, I decided to make the change to administration and into management and began by doing projects and then my first position was as a Departmental Administrator and that’s where, I think, people go who want to progress up to Administrator in University. Working in a department, and I was a Departmental Administrator firstly in Bristol University and then I came to Cambridge about 6 years ago to the Department of Pathology and from there, I worked there for 3 years, and I think the natural progression for a Department Administrator was up through to being Secretary of the School, which I’ve been now for 3 or 4 years.
