About this item
Description: |
Trump and the Protestant Reaction to Make America Great Again explores how polarised interpretations of America’s past influence the present. Competing Protestant reactions to President Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ slogan evidence a fundamental divide over how Americans remember or forget historical racism, sexism and exploitation. Additionally, these Protestants disagree over how the past influences present injustice and inequality. The 2020 killing of George Floyd forced these rival histories into the open. Although appeals to history often fuel polarisation, this book argues that applying historical analysis to present divisions can help create a shared historical memory that bridges the partisan divide.
