Ben Thorp Brown (Artist)
Ben Thorp Brown will present two recent digital video works that foreground the body's perception of the world and itself in it. Drowned World (2016) was produced in Marfa, Texas at the Chinati Foundation, and deals with an inability to see the landscape with depth perception. Gropius Memory Palace (2017), filmed in Walter Gropius' Fagus Factory in Alfeld, Germany, takes the form of a guided meditation performed by a hypnotherapist, where viewers are invited to construct a ‘memory palace’ as they move through this iconic architecture. Ben Thorp Brown works across a number of artistic disciplines including video, photography, sculpture, and performance. His work addresses how transformations in technology and capitalism affect embodied experience and memory. His recent work has been presented in exhibitions at the St. Louis Art Museum; Dreamlands: Immersive Cinema and Art, 1905-2016, The Whitney Museum; Greater New York MoMA PS1; 24/7 the human condition Vienna Biennale; and Chance Motives SculptureCenter. He has participated in residencies through the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council's Workspace program and at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX, and received grant support from Creative Capital and The Graham Foundation. He received a B.A. from Williams College, an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. He currently teaches in the BFA and MFA programs at Parsons The New School. |
