Description: Background to the Channel 4 Millennium Series ‘The Day the World Took Off’, shown in 2000. With thanks to Windfall Films.

Inside an old castle, Simon Schaffer, in three sequences, compares the military technologies of the east and the west. The immense logistical problems of warfare led in opposite directions. The growth of huge mechanical centres in the west, such as the Venice Arsenal, was a background to the mechanization of the west.
