About this item
Description: |
Background to Channel 4 'The Day the World Took Off', shown in 2000. With thanks to Windfall Films.
Simon Schaffer describes the combination of elements out of which a ship is made which, particularly in the great ships of the eighteenth century onwards, made them into complex technical systems. They consisted of many mass produced objects, including pulley blocks, which required skill to manufacture and encouraged automation and standardization. |
