About this item
Description: | Unsigned and undocumented, the Rothschild bronzes pose many questions, not least who made them. They have recently been attributed to Michelangelo and dated to c. 1506-08, based on compelling visual and technical evidence. My paper considers the question of authorship from the point of view of the anatomy of the nude males, which is so incredibly detailed and accurate, and in places ‘hyper-anatomised’ for expressive purposes. It also considers those anatomical features which prove direct knowledge of dissected corpses, and those which recur on other documented works by Michelangelo. |
