Abstract: | Collective cell migration is characteristic for epithelial cells requiring not only reversible attachment to the extracellular matrix but also continued cell-to-cell cohesion of the entire epithelial sheet. The different types of adhesive functions have been linked to morphologically and functionally distinct multimolecular complexes, which physically couple to the cytoskeleton and act as signaling centers. We will first describe the different types of adhesion sites that are characteristically encountered in epithelial tissues and present selected examples of human diseases linked to perturbation of these sites. Emphasis will be on the plasticity of the different junction types and their cross-talk with each other and other cellular elements. Finally, questions regarding modulation and function of the different adhesion modes will be discussed in the context of epithelial cell migration. |
