Abstract:	Look at the girl on the right, who presents a gold minus performance. You will see that she makes good eye contact with her partners throughout the discussion. She is a very active participant in the discussion and listens and responds carefully to what others have to say. She gives very clear reasons for her views, referring to her previous statements and logically building lines of argument. She clearly listens to the views of others, because she responds to them and often builds upon what they have said. She is willing to challenge perspectives (e.g. ‘I agree… but…’; ‘I kind of disagree with that…’), and supports her own views by giving reasons. She occasionally sums up group decisions. You may wish to contrast this performance overall with the boy in the middle, who rarely makes eye contact. He is rather more tentative, both in his views and in the ways in which these are presented. He makes little direct reference to what other people say. As a group, these students are effective in taking turns, allowing each of them time and space to present their views. However, this very systematic turn-taking seems to restrict the students’ willingness to ask one another questions about their views.
