Abstract:	The lecture presents an overview of the EU's current efforts in conflict management and the rule of law. Specific focus is given to the monitoring mission in Aceh (Indonesia). Factors behind its success and reasons why the EU intervenes in countries outside its membership will also be discussed. The principles and scope of electoral observation and the EU role in this field will also feature in the lecture along with an overview of main electoral missions and examples of observers' reports from Armenia, Maldives, Tanzania and others.
