Abstract: | The principle of economic sovereignty of States was developed mainly after the establishment of the UN and especially after the independence of many developing countries to enable them to develop their economy. However, this very principle is now invoked by these very States to engage in unrestricted economic activities at the expense of the environment, human rights and other societal values. They have done so by shielding themselves from international scrutiny of their activities on the basis of the principle of economic sovereignty of States. It is in this context that this lecture aims to examine what is meant by the notion of economic sovereignty of States in modern international law, how it has been invoked by States in different phases of history and whether the time has come to reassess and redefine the notion in the light of the developments taking place within the broader family of public international law. |
