Abstract: The panel discussion on Siegfried Sassoon was held in the Umney Lecture Theatre, Robinson College, Cambridge on 20 July 2010 as part of the celebrations to mark the opening of the University Library exhibition 'Dream Voices: Siegfried Sassoon, Memory and War'. The participants were Professor Jon Stallworthy, Lord Egremont, Dr Santanu Das and Professor Tim Kendall. After an introductory address by the chairman, Jon Stallworthy, Max Egremont spoke on Sassoon’s life and continuing significance as a writer, Santanu Das explored Sassoon’s responses in verse and prose to the death of his friend David Thomas in 1916, and Tim Kendall spoke about ‘The Kiss’, the poem inspired by Major Campbell’s belligerent lecture on ‘The Spirit of the Bayonet’.
