Abstract:	Since the time of Newton, physicists have taken it for granted that change is governed by some specific formula, an assumption that has now become problematic. An alternative discussed here, involving Peirce's 'thirdness' [1] together with the ideas of Yardley [2], has as its basis the idea that reality is much influenced by the way parts work together to form wholes. The emergence of language provides a striking illustration of such a process at work. To understand the phenomena of mathematics and music on a similar basis appears to require these mechanisms to function in a subtler domain, which we identify with the Platonic realm. The latter may also have a part to play in the phenomena studied in physics, with meaning and intention playing an important role, typically disregarded in science. [1] 'Thirdness'.
