About this item
Description: | A talk given after dinner to the Oxford University Asia-Pacific Society in 2006, and filmed in February 2013. It tries to describe some of the factors which led to the emergence of Japan as the first industrial superpower in Eastern Asia. In particular it looks at Jaspers' thesis of the Axial Age and argues that Japan is the only non-Axial civilization in the world. Based on the book by Alan Macfarlane 'Japan through the looking glass' (2007) |
