Abstract: | This longer (9-min.) sequence includes the preceding Clips 1 and 2 and some extra footage in between. Primary school teacher Diane played a pre-recorded audio file of herself reading out a personal safety scenario, then takes “suggestions about what people think is really important” in the text. These are highlighted by one pupil on behalf of her peers. Finally, the pupils (aged 10) suggest words and phrases that may be useful in their coming group discussions about secrets and the same pupil annotates around the text to represent her peers’ understandings of the characters’ feelings. The teacher manages the discussion; pupils are stimulated to go beyond the printed text, generating and explaining their own ideas and illustrating empathy (e.g. “beaten”, “confused”).
The sequence shows how using the colour highlighter or annotating with the IWB pen can be particularly effective in drawing attention to particular aspects of a text, picture or other digital resource and in developing and recording interpretations of it. This footage was collected during the IWBs and Dialogic Teaching research study funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council (ref.
