C: I’m six and I’m Connor
N: Hello, my name’s Natalia and I’m 7
A: Hello, my name’s Anna and I’m 6 and a half
L: Ok, so would you like to have a go and see if you can build the shape that’s in the picture?
(all children leaning in, looking at tangram blocks. N only child touching. Puts 2 bottom blocks together 00.25)
A: Look, look, this…(A reaches out for blocks, A only child touching)
C: Let’s have different, let’s have both…do 2 each
(A stops moving blocks, looks at the picture and back to blocks 00.33)
(A has added yellow block and green block to N’s 2)
C: My turn
(A and N sitting and watching 00.42)
C: So that goes…there…that goes there (adds orange blue block correctly and orange block wrongly)
A (looks at pictures, then looks at blocks 00.49) No look, look at that…look at the picture
C: Oh…(adjusts the orange brick. N and C also reach out to touch the orange brick, checking on pictures 00.57)
C: There. It’s a deer!
N: Yeah, but I don’t really like deer
L: Have you finished already? Are you happy with that one?
N: Yeah
C: Yeah
C: It was easy.
L: Oh, was it easy?
A: Yeah, last time we kept getting bits wrong
C: Yeah, (makes movements with hands, moving imaginary blocks)…that goes there, that goes there, that should go there, let’s move that around
N: (nodding) Yeah
A: You’re still filming.
L: I am still filming. Do you think it went better this time than it did last time?
All: Yeah
L: Ok, well I’ve got another job for you. So, I would like you to have a bit of a discussion with each other. So, I’ve got a question for you and I’d like you to tell each other what you think. So here’s the question – does one of you want to read it out?
A: Who wants to read it out?
C: (puts hand up) Me!
A: Let’s just say all of us
All read together: Is it better to make one person very happy or ten people a little bit happy?
N: Um, 10…
C: Ten people a little bit happy
N Yeah, 10 people a little bit happy, because if you make 10 people a little bit happy…
A: But of you only make 1 person happy…
(C and A both interrupt but N continues to make her point)
N They would be really really like…
A: Miserable
C (makes miserable face)
N: No, like, they might not go um, like this (02.36 – pumps arms up and makes excited noise) if you make 10 people a little bit happy
A: Cause otherwise, some of them could be really miserable and one person very happy but if you made 10 people happy you wouldn’t have no miserable people
C (distracted, plays with blocks 02.53)
N: If you made one person very happy, everyone would be like, oh why did you make…why is he, um, why is he making her happy and not me?
C (still playing with blocks) Yeah, that’d just make them really grumpy.
A: Yeah
N: And then they’d never play with someone who made someone happy again
A: Yeah, that’s quite a sad story
N: So that’s why 10 people a little bit happy
A: Yes
(all look up at L, having finished discussion)
