CULS and CUSU LGBT+ are delighted to have welcomed Herman Duarte, Founding Partner at the first and only law firm in Latin America that has the express purpose of eradicating LGBT+ discrimination to the Faculty of Law on 29 January 2018. Herman also founded the Latin American Foundation for the promotion and protection of LGBT rights: Fundación Igualitos. He was named one of OUTstanding's Top 50 LGBT+ Future Leaders.
Herman and his team were involved in the landmark decision of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in favour of equal marriage and transgender rights, binding on Costa Rica and over 12 states in the Inter-American jurisdiction. Herman is a vocal advocate for Equal Marriage in El Salvador, and organised the first Equal Marriage congress for the continent, in Costa Rica. He works to denounce hate crimes against LGBT+ people in the region, raising public opinion and support on the topic of marriage equality and gender recognition. There will be some filming at the event for a university social media film about CUSU LGBT+ that’s going to be put out over History Month.
