The talk gives an overview of several recent research projects where feedback control and estimation techniques have been applied to systems that are subject to fluid flows governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. A variety of applications are discussed, including bluff-body drag reduction, wind-turbine gust prediction and sea-surface reconstruction.

Abstract: This talk will provide an overview of several recent research projects where feedback control and estimation techniques have been applied to systems that are subject to fluid flows governed by the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Particular emphasis is placed on the problem of obtaining simplified flow models that are more amenable to controller/estimator synthesis and the technical challenges faced in obtaining such models. A variety of applications will be discussed, including bluff-body drag reduction, wind-turbine gust prediction and sea-surface reconstruction.
