Abstract: Disasters have been steadily increasing in both frequency and intensity and pose a growing challenge to society. Though there has been a significant increase in research on the psychological impact of disasters, there still remains much to be learned, especially from a psychology of religion/spirituality (RS) vantage point. Disasters represent a unique context for studying psychological and spiritual flourishing. Further, studying disasters may lead to new discoveries, and perhaps more importantly, new questions within the psychology of the RS field. Because RS have been reliably linked to a wide variety of health outcomes, there is a vital need for field research on how to best support, promote, and harness RS resources for helping people and communities prepare for and recover from disasters. The purpose of this presentation is to bring attention to an emerging line of psychology of RS and disasters inquiry. Specifically, this presentation will review and summarize what has been learned thus far, with an emphasis on insights garnered following Hurricane Katrina. Recommendations for catalyzing future research will also be discussed.
