In this clip the participant on the left’s performance is Gold minus, whilst the participant on the right is performing at a Silver minus level. Both take turns and listen and respond appropriately in the discussion.
Left participant: This performance is characterised by very effective questioning, which helps both partners to establish a precise understanding of the next steps of the task as it develops. She also provides clear instructions, using appropriate and suitably technical vocabulary. Having completed a part of the task, she does not always cue her readiness to her partner, but overall she takes a very methodical approach by clearly articulating her instructions and, to a slightly lesser extent, her needs when being instructed. Her sense of the needs of audience is strongly indicated by her questions and instructions.
Right participant: This performance is much more hesitant, though she is stronger when giving instructions than when receiving them. Her vocabulary and the organisation of her talk are often not precise enough to convey clear meaning. She asks few questions and rarely seeks clarification to ensure that she has fully understood the instructions. However, she does ask her partner more questions when acting as an instructor – for example, asking her partner to say when she is ready for the next instruction.
