Abstract: These are Gold performances from both participants, who are listening actively and responding appropriately in the discussion. Both use clear and precise vocabulary, referring to size, shape, position, orientation and colour. The language is, by turns, instructional and enquiring, suitable for the purpose of the task. The content of instructions is precise and sequential, conveying meaning clearly. Information is sought by asking clear questions for clarification; these build logically upon one another where appropriate. The focus on the task is strong and evident throughout and there is a strong intention, conveyed through questioning, to ensure that the task partner fully understands each instruction before moving on; they each provide verbal cues to indicate their readiness. The organisation of talk and the register used is very suitable for this task. Turns are thus taken appropriately to drive the task forward, and when the roles are swapped, there is a correspondingly good use of instructional and enquiry strategies.
