Abstract: The dynamics of nature’s processes turn out to be characterised, to a significant extent, by randomness, which leads to unpredictability or even uncomputability. The existence of these levels of complexity seems to challenge viewpoints stemming from Christian theology, according to which there should be “purpose” and order in the world. The aim of this talk is to address chance and randomness in time-evolution also from a philosophical viewpoint, in order to show that in this context degrees of compatibility can emerge between Christian theology and modern science. The general idea corresponds to the fact that there is no contradiction between “purpose” in Creation on the one hand, and uncomputability and randomness in the universe on the other.
