Abstract: The recent birth of ‘science-engaged theology’ is a new stage in the ever-changing relationship between the natural sciences and theology. But what is ‘science-engaged theology?’ and how does it stand in both continuity and distinction from previous work in the field of science-and-religion? In this paper I articulate a vision of science-engaged theology as the thesis that the natural sciences should be counted among the four traditional sources that theologians draw upon in seeking to know God and all things in relation to God. I will discuss the place of empirical scientific investigation as it is practiced today among the sources of Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience. I conclude by reflecting on how science-engaged theology relates to the (surprisingly recent) claim that theology is ‘queen of the sciences’.
