Abstract: Although natural theology is understood in many ways, it generally rests on an implicit assumption that the natural world, as God’s creation, is able to bear witness to the wisdom and beauty of its creator. This lecture explores the history of this idea, focussing on some of its most important biological applications, including John Ray’s Wisdom of God Manifested in the Works of the Creation (1691) and William Paley’s famous image of the “divine watchmaker” (1802). We shall consider the possible implications of Darwinism for such approaches, and look at some recent formulations of natural theologies which aim to respond to this challenge.
