Abstract: Many behaviours of biological cells appear remarkably ordered and purposeful. I will consider the example of cell migration. After looking at the behaviour at the cellular scale we will delve into more microscopic details. By considering subcellular, molecular and submolecular levels we will see processes that appear disordered and random. After this reductionist approach, reducing a cell to component molecules, we will return to the cellular level and consider emergent properties. The interplay of disorder and order in these cellular processes can lead us to wonder at the complexity of these ingenious mechanisms and the beauty of the emergent structures and behaviours.
