Abstract: Religious and fantastical ideas are widely prevalent in our present society and are also widespread throughout history. These recurrent patterns suggest that something more than culture explains why these ideas are so widespread. But, where do these ideas originate and why have some continued to exist for several millennia? Current research over the past decade has suggested that particular aspects of our cognition constrain the variability and transmission of these ideas. During my lecture I will present how children come to develop ideas about God and other supernatural agents. The science of child development gives us a rich example of how cognition develops and through these developing cognitive abilities, helps us understand how we formulate ideas about religion and fantasy, and why we find these ideas so interesting.
