Abstract: | Throughout the history of physics, theories of physics were taken as a faithful reflection of the nature of the world, and worldviews were based on them. Thus Newton's mechanics was the basis for a mechanistic, deterministic view of the world, which finally collapsed in the last century due to the advent of chaos theory and quantum mechanics. This experience did not cure scientists from basing worldviews on their science. Thus particle physics is often used as a basis for a reductionist world view, and complexity science as basis for a spiritual naturalism. The talk will argue that laws of physics should instead be considered as idealizations with a limited scope. In particular, they do not prescribe everything that happens in nature and leave plenty of room for free actions of men as well as for God's action. |
