Abstract: | This lecture considers the rise of the New Atheism, noting especially its appeal to science as an exemplar of reliable knowledge. After considering the roots of this approach in the Enlightenment, the lecture moves on to consider some important theological and philosophical questions that arise from the New Atheism, including the limits of human reason, the problematic relationship between science and questions of value and meaning, and the theological question of the nature of God. Although this lecture will interact primarily with Richard Dawkins, it will also consider some themes in the writings of Daniel Dennett and Sam Harris. |
