Description: Carlos Fuentes is one of the three most important living Latin American writers, with Gabriel García Márquez and Mario Vargas Llosa. Some key works are: Where the Air is Clear (1958, fiftieth anniversary this year), The Death of Artemio Cruz (1962), Change of Skin (1967), Terra Nostra (1975), and Burnt Water (1981).

The Mexican novelist Carlos Fuentes’s eightieth birthday is being marked this year with a large number of events in various countries.

Fuentes has spoken at Emmanuel in the past, and visited on various occasions. Two years ago, he donated a large number of his books to the College. Fuentes then generously chose to donate a second collection of books to Emmanuel Library to mark his birthday. In conjunction with the Mexican Embassy and Cultural Attaché we organized an event to coincide with the donation. A distinguished Mexican film director and critic, Ignacio Durán, two leading novelists, Jorge Volpi and Ignacio Padilla, and Steven Boldy made short presentations and then held an open conversation with Fuentes.
